what an interesting post. I'm suspect of anyone tauting any aspect of the marketing of Dell as superior to Apple.

People pay twice as much for an Apple for computers with half the tech "stats". An amazing credit to the power of that brand.

That said, I've never thought about this topic, but I may pick up the book to learn.

I think Scoble confused the ideas of transparency and freedom.

Being an employee of a company limits your freedom because you're a representative of that company. You choose to follow the general culture and rules of that organization for the betterment of that company. For Apple, it's not blogging and social media-izing your work. For someone like Dell, who has a different focus, you can be blogging and shouting to the world that you work for them.

For me transparency means when I'm actively pimping a product or my company's work I let people know that I am a paid employee.

Thanks Andy for your comment. I'm a huge fan of Marketing Pilgrim! I'm actually very interested to read the rest of the book. The foreword got me thinking more about the larger issue of what it means for corporations to be transparent, and to what extent it will really impact their overall business goals.
Thanks for reading!

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for taking the time to start reading the book. We profile Dell's missteps (and successes) and also look at two ways Apple successfully displayed radical transparency.

Having evangelist customers is an important part of reputation management--something Apple does well--and you'll find we explore this in the book as well.

I hope you enjoy the book and I look forward to reading your thoughts.

Thanks!

I looked over your blog and it looks really good. Do you ever do link exchanges on your blog roll? If you do, I'd like to exchange links with you.

Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks..
